Orginally this lighter was invented by sailors who used them to light their pipes at sea in windy conditions.
But the lighter became popular in WW2 when it was used by soldiers. You could not have an open flame in the trenches, like from a traditional lighter or match, as it would produce a light source that would reveal your position to the enemy.
